"Life is a long lesson in humility." - James M. Barrie
Here’s my take on the above quote: Success, instead of getting to our head, should make us humble. The more successful we become, the more we should be modest and unpretentious. The heart should be located over and above the head. On the other hand, we should also accept with humility trials and tribulations that come our way. This means an acknowledgement of our frailties and limitations. If we do this, with the intent of improving our situation, we are on the way to transforming trials into triumphs, scars into stars.
Humility breeds a compassionate heart. It is like using the eyes of God when we look at situations. It is the source of all virtues and the key to God’s heart.
One of the major reasons why there are conflicts is because of lack of humility from both contending parties. Humility has the capacity to understand deeply the point of view of other people. The mere fact that we can entertain a benefit of the doubt is already taking the right step towards avoiding conflict and misunderstanding, or reconciliation if the conflict is already ongoing.
The way I see it, the practice of humility is a win-win situation. Some people might perceive this as a sign of weakness but to the ONE above it is an act of obedience.
James Barrie is right. Life is indeed a long lesson in humility. It will only end when we draw out our last breath.
